College Tours — Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Although there is no charge, advance sign up is required for these tours. Space is limited and participants will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in participating, please sign up on the ACCT Congress registration form. Tours will depart from the 45th Street entrance of the New York Marriott Marquis.
Borough of Manhattan Community College

Borough of Manhattan Community College
BMCC is the only community college in the borough of Manhattan and the largest in The City University of New York System.
Located in the heart of downtown New York City, north of the World Trade Center’s redevelopment site, BMCC’s 20,000 students come from over 100 countries and embody the mosaic blend of New York’s unprecedented cultural diversity.
The BMCC campus tour will include a visit to the College’s state-of-the-art media center, the Department of Allied Health Sciences Human Patient Simulator Library, other programs and student support service units. Lunch will be provided.

Bronx Community College
Bronx Community College is an urban community college with 9,000 degree enrollees. Located in the northeast Bronx, near the Harlem River, the 52-acre tree lined campus has distinctive Beaux Art architecture, designed by Stanford White. The campus includes the magnificent Gould Memorial Library Rotunda and Auditorium, which opened in 1899 and the first Hall of Fame in America, “The Hall of Fame for Great Americans.”
The campus has been the site of many Hollywood films, including: “A Beautiful Mind,” “Sophie’s Choice,” “Siege,” “The Thomas Crown Affair,” and “The Good Shepherd.” Visitors will tour the Hall of Fame, the Accelerated Studies in Associates Program — a special Mayoral program aimed at accelerating the associate degree attainment — the Health Sciences Academy, the Language Immersion Program, and other programs. Lunch will be provided.

Hostos Community College
Hostos Community College was created in 1968 in response to the demands of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic leaders who urged for the establishment of a college to meet the needs of the South Bronx population. Visitors will have lunch with Student Government Leaders, Student Ambassadors and College representatives.
The mission of Hostos Community College is to provide “educational opportunities leading to socio-economic mobility for first and second generation Hispanics, African Americans and other residents of New York City who have encountered significant barriers to higher education.”

Queensborough Community College
Queensborough Community College/CUNY, located on 37 suburban acres in Bayside Queens, enrolls more than 13,000 students in transfer and career degree programs. Tour guests will visit the Nursing Department’s “Virtual” Hospital, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, the Art Gallery, and several instructional and student support facilities. The campus tour will include lunch with senior administrators.
College strengths include the diversity of its student body as well as a culture of academic excellence, an array of instructional support services, and the credentials and research activities of its faculty — nearly 60 percent hold doctoral degrees.

LaGuardia Community College
LaGuardia Community College will showcase its New York Designs, a design business center located at the college. NY Designs is a 35,000-square-foot center that offers office suites, shared conference rooms, a gallery, a photoshoot studio, a materials library, and an expansive lounge overlooking Manhattan. The center now houses 12 design businesses and has served over 500 designers since 2004. Since the college is only 10 minutes from Times Square, attendees will be escorted by college staff and provided with a round-trip NYC MetroCard.
Students come from more than 160 different countries, speaking 110 different languages. Over 97,000 people use the facilities of LaGuardia each year. The college enrolls almost 14,000 degree-seeking students. Lunch will be provided.
