ACCT is offering four pre-Congress Academies with topics of specific interest to trustees. Because seating is limited, we encourage participants to sign up in advance. Registration information is available on the Congress registration form.

ACCT’s Governance Leadership Institute: The Crucial Leadership Role of the Chair & the Executive Committee of the Board
Take advantage of a one-day primer for the highly-acclaimed ACCT Governance Leadership Institute series. This abbreviated version of the Institute will provide an opportunity for the leadership team of the board (chair, vice chair, other officers, trustees and the president) to share a unique learning and bonding experience. What Trustees Need to Know about Presidential Contracts & Conducting the Presidential Evaluation
The presidential contract should incorporate the right balance between protecting the interests of the institution and the president. What do boards need to know about presidential contracts? What is an appropriate level of compensation? How can the board effectively carry out all aspects of the contract, including the presidential evaluation? What does a board need to consider when renewing the president’s contract? What are some common mistakes? This academy will answer these and other pressing questions. Cost: $125

Effective Board Governance: Policy Governance™, Traditional Models & Adaptations
Boards and presidents interested in exploring the elements of effective board governance, including Policy Governance™, traditional models and other alternatives, will gain greater insight into governance issues that are unique to community colleges through interaction with governance experts. Focus will be on the what, when, why and how of effective governance, including a review of the board’s agenda, board policy manuals, bylaws and operating procedures. Cost: $125

Crisis Preparedness & Response
This session will provide trustees with hands-on information and materials to address emergency preparedness and response. Presenters will discuss issues related to campus security, including: armed campus police officers; a basic understanding of the National Incident Management System (NIMS), the policy implications for trustees and the key questions trustees should ask of campus leaders to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. Moderated by Prairie State College Board of Trustees Chair Mark Fazzini, and current Chief of the Police Department at the College of DuPage (Illinois). No additional cost.

ACCT Leadership Congress: Session Tracks
ACCT’s 39th Annual Leadership Congress is dedicated to the role of community college trustees in combating poverty through education. The 2008 Congress sessions, academies, meetings and other events are organized around five key tracks that were developed to offer an expansive and thorough examination of issues faced by community colleges today.
