Humber College, one of the largest polytechnic training institutes in Canada, is home to more than 23,000 full-time students studying in one-year certificate programs, two- and three-year diplomas, four-year baccalaureates, and one- and two-year post graduate certificate programs. Programming is comprehensive, including arts, business, health, hospitality, media, social services, tourism and technology. Humber also serves more than 1,200 apprenticeship students annually, with a primary focus in electrical and plumbing, and more than 50,000 registrants participate in the various continuing education programs.
The Humber tour will depart from the conference hotel at 9:30 a.m., with an arrival at the college’s north campus approximately 35 minutes later. The day will begin with a 20 minute overview of the college given by Michael Hatton, Vice President Academic. This will be followed by on-site presentations in various labs and teaching resource rooms where there will be an opportunity to interact with students and professors.
Specific areas of focus will include the Digital Media Newsroom (a state-of-the-art media complex that is home to journalism, radio, television and web broadcasting programs); Humber's Canadian Centre of Culinary Arts & Science (culinary students enjoy the latest in European technology as these kitchens utilize environmentally friendly technologies that include induction cooking, ceiling ventilation systems, temperature controlled cold storage and teaching-specific wine cellars); the Humber Spa (where spa management students learn the art and management of manicures, pedicures, facials and makeup application as well as more innovative therapies such as aromatherapy, oxygen therapy and hot-stone remedies), and the Centre for Trades & Technology (a 90,000 square foot home for plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding and home renovation students).
An on-campus lunch will be included, with departure from the college scheduled at 2:15 in order to arrive back at the hotel by 3 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring questions, appetites and cameras.
