ACCT would like to express gratitude and appreciation to Central New Mexico Community College and all those who attended and helped to make the pilot Diversity Leadership Institute a success.
In response to requests from our members,
ACCT hosted a two-day leadership institute for trustees and presidents that focused on fostering diversity, inclusiveness, understanding, acceptance and respect in a multi-cultural society. This unique event took place in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, August 3-5.
Santa Ana Pueblo is located approximately 20 minutes outside of Albuquerque, and only one hour from Santa Fe's many attractions.
ACCT’s
Governance Leadership Institutes present unique opportunities for trustees and presidents to work together and harness the innovation that multiple perspectives and diverse experiences can create. The Diversity Institute focused on proven practices that encourage engagement, examine values, promote respect and celebrate differences—approaches that are imperative in today’s increasingly diverse community college settings.
GOALS—The
Institute will equip trustees with the knowledge to:
—Examine the
complexity of a multi-cultural community;
—Determine Institutional
effectiveness in providing educational opportunities for traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups;
—Prevent and remedy
prejudicial, discriminatory or racist behaviors and policies;
—Ensure
institutions work to equip all community college students with the knowledge,familiarity and experiences necessary to succeed in an increasingly diverse world community; and
—Promote respect
for all, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, age or socioeconomic status.
The Institute will focus on proven practices, tools and techniques
that strengthen relationships and that help trustees accept responsibility for holding one another accountable.
Who Should Attend?
This event is a must-attend for
—Teams
of trustees and presidents. Attendance by a team of trustees (three or more) and the president yields the greatest results.
—Trustees
who want to learn more about promoting diversity.
—African
American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, Women, LGBT, Disabled, Senior Citizen and other trustees who want to share their perspective and
learn about others.
