Selection Process
Interim President Placements
5 Easy Steps to Appointing an Interim President Through ACCT
Step One - Contact ACCT
ACCT's Board Leadership Services is notified of the college's interest in an interim president or chancellor, and works with the institution to determine what is desired in the transition leadership.
Step Two - Recruitment
The ACCT Office of Board Leadership Services maintains an extensive file of former presidents and chancellors who are willing to serve as interim president or chancellor for a period of three months (or less) to 12 months. Several candidates which ACCT considers to be good matches for the institution will be identified.
Step Three - Identification
ACCT presents the resumes of three to five available interim candidates who meet the profile/needs as defined by the board for consideration. After reviewing the resumes, the governing board notifies the ACCT office of the preferred candidates, in descending priority order.
Step Four - Interview
Board Leadership Services will make arrangements for personal or telephone interviews of the preferred candidates (at the college or district expense) by the Board of Trustees. We will also provide written references if the board wishes (at the college or district expense). After selecting their chosen interim candidate, the Board Chair and the candidate will discuss the position, additional references will be provided, and if desired arrangements for a personal interview and college visit will be made.
The ACCT-sponsored interim president or chancellor cannot become a candidate for the permanent position.
Step Five - Negotiation
Final negotiations pertaining to salary and other reimbursable expenses are negotiated through ACCT. ACCT's guidelines to the governing board regarding the interim president or chancellor's salary include:
• The board should pay the interim president or chancellor a salary (or salary plus expenses) commensurate with the expenses incurred in maintaining two households and other related expenses incurred during the tenure of office.
• The total remuneration (salary and expenses) should be equal to, or greater than, the salary of the present or former president or chancellor for the length of the contract.
