ACCT Statement on President Trump's 'Skinny' Budget

This morning, President Trump released his initial request for funding for fiscal year (FY) 2018. While not the full budget request expected later this spring, early details appear to be at odds with the President's promise to provide for "...a Government that puts the needs of its own people first."

The proposed budget includes a 14 percent cut to the Department of Education and a 21 percent cut to the Department of Labor, including raiding the Pell Grant Account by $3.9 billion, and eliminating Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) program that supports 380,000 community college students.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos just last month told the community college leadership that our colleges are "...absolutely essential engines of workforce and economic development—locally and regionally."

The President's budget proposal will make this work difficult by severely curtailing critical support to students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to access community colleges and the education and training they provide.
