New ACCT Governance Guide Facilitates Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Community Colleges
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: A Checklist and Implementation Guide for Community College Boards is designed to make equity actionable.
WASHINGTON, DC—The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), today released Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: A Checklist and Implementation Guide for Community College Boards, with the endorsement of the associations’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. The release of the guide follows a commitment made by the association to empower community college leaders to make meaningful changes at their institutions in the interests of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.
“The guide recognizes that equity is complex and that it impacts all facets and all programs in community colleges,” said ACCT Chair Dawn Erlandson, who also serves as a trustee for the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system. “Educational equity depends on fairness and inclusion in the educational system and includes equity in various categories, including socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, gender, gender identity and disability, among others.”
“This guide,” said ACCT President and CEO J. Noah Brown, “is intended to assist community and technical college boards of trustees and CEOs to actively implement and reinforce a culture that values and promotes diversity, equity and inclusion.”
The guide details critical steps community college boards must take in order to implement policy through an equity lens, including:
- Create an equity-minded board and institution.
- Monitor and evaluate college progress on equity goals.
- Annually evaluate board leadership, effectiveness and continuous improvement on these goals.
The guide also includes a diversity, equity and inclusion inventory, or checklist, for the board, the college, and faculty and staff, recognizing that all parties must operate in concert to realize meaningful changes on campus.
“The governing board’s role is pivotal in impacting college culture,” Brown said, “by shaping and supporting goals, policies, practices and college procedures that promote equitable experiences, opportunities and outcomes.” The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Checklist and Implementation Guide is designed to make an impact.
